Volunteer work gives you a chance to explore different types of work, "try on" different work settings, learn workplace skills, and meet people who could be important contacts in your network.
For example, if you volunteer in a recreational program for youth at your community pool, you learn how to:
- organize a recreational program;
- meet health and safety regulations;
- work with staff such as the pool manager and lifeguards;
- fulfill the needs of program participants.
You could add to your Volunteer Experience Section:
1999 Youth Swim Program, Halifax Community Centre
- Provided assistance in games and activities for 20 youth/10 hours a week.
- Handled pool maintenance and chlorine levels.
Volunteer work can also help you find work by:
- extending your network of people who know the quality of your work;
- developing a skill or maintaining current skills;
- creating additional sources for a positive work reference
Note for those receiving Employment Insurance. Check on what you need to do to demonstrate availability for work. See Your rights and responsibilities towards Employment Insurance (EI).
