Work Application Do's and Don'ts
You may wish to apply for a job where the employer provides application forms. Complete the work application, even though you decide to attach your résumé to it.
Do...
- Dress appropriately for the type of work when visiting an organization and smile when asking for applications. The person you meet may be the hiring manager!
- Ask for two applications--one for practice and one to submit.
- Be prepared to fill out the application on the spot if asked. Have your information ready.
- Write clearly and neatly.
- Fill in all required information.
- Take the applications home if you can and give yourself time to do a good job. When you're finished, have a family member or friend check it for you.
Don't...
- Make spelling mistakes.
- Leave any sections blank unless they are asking for inappropriate information. Canadian Human Rights Guide to Screening and Selection in Employment lists the questions that are inappropriate to ask.
- Hand it in if it's smudged or sloppy.
