Do you ever wonder how you could use the knowledge, skills and experiences you've gained through life towards further learning (getting into, or even fast-tracking into a certification, diploma or degree program), a new job or a new career?
What: The PLAR process identifies, documents, assesses and recognizes formal and informal learning. PLAR can help you discover skills and abilities you didn't realize you have.
"Recognition" can be in the form of acceptance into an educational program, strengthened workplace opportunities or a better understanding of one's personal goals.
PLAR is based on the premise that learning can occur in many places:in an academic setting, in the workplace, through life experience or in a foreign country.
Benefits of PLAR:
- Fulfillment through discovery of what you know and can do.
- Assessment of your experience, knowledge and skills.
- Placement at a level that is right for you, in work and in studies.
- Less repetition - your prior learning can be recognized, so you won't have to re-learn what you already know.
- Advanced standing in studies could reduce your financial costs.
- Use it to assess the learning, skills and capabilities you have gained throughout your life;
- to get recognition of this learning for your own personal benefit;
- to help you enter a learning/training program; or
- to find a new job, or enter or re-enter the workforce.
How to Get an Assessment:
There are a number of different processes and tools to assess and recognize learning. Generally, your prior learning may be assessed through:
- Portfolio development/assessment - a collection of items and information that represent what you know, what you have learned and the experiences you have had. This can include certifications or honours you have received, samples of your work, activities you have been involved with and responsibilities you have had in your personal life.
- Demonstration - written or non-written assessments such as essays, multiple choice tests, structured interviews, oral presentations, model building or practical demonstrations of a skill.
- Standardized exam.
